To quote POC, “Ek ken ‘n anne kêrel, van Pêrel se werel…” Sy naam was Jaak. Jaak Spraak.
One of my favourite memories of Jaak was in 2006 during the recording of ‘Kom Op’ for Jitsvinger’s debut album Skeletsleutel at our High Voltage Studio in Woodstock.

It was his first major break outside of Paarl, the first of much collaboration that followed, since everyone in the city wanted to work with him. Maybe because his Afrikaans sounded different, born and bred on the ‘wrong’ side of the Berg River, where the middle finger of Afrikaans proudly stands erected as a monumental reminder of colonial subjugation.

Die Riel van Hip Hop is a celebration of Riel dance and uses Hip Hop to weave stories of language, identity and culture.
It employs multi-media with graphics by the pioneering graffiti artist, Mak1 to imitate the animated story telling style of Riel dance culture.

"All Trains are running 10 minutes late" Voicemail Lady announces.
We aren’t really paying attention. We are used to this. The train eventually comes rushing into the station, pretending to be on time.
The vibe on board is not too vibrant. Capetonians are affected by the weather and temperatures. Cold and overcast weather in the middle of summer does not encourage us to have spontaneous conversations. We usually become withdrawn on days like this, but today someone luckily breaks the silence.

‘Climate Change’; it is a term enjoying prominence in the last decade with Cape Town and its Mediterranean climate being the front-runner of this phenomenon.  
It’s a sunny windless morning with the smell of perfume and cologne trying to overwhelm the senses; each one has its own character and charm.

“Wat klap soe?” a guy asks a group of three friends as the train makes its way to the next station.
“It staan soe” a guy from the group replies.
“Hosh” the first guy replies.
“Gaan ôs soe dala my ma se kin?” another guy asks.
“Aweh ôs staan op haai nomme. ’n Man moet ’n kroon kyk, of wat sê die broese?” another guy in the group interjects, looking at the rest of the group.

Veels Geluk aan Early B, Hemel Besem, Jerome Rex en Linkris met hul benoemings as die Ghoema 2017 Finaliste in die Beste Hip Hop Liedjie Van Die Jaar Kategorie.

Smoortjies en Smoothies is intended to take us on journey of tastes and flavours and to get the event we had to take a little journey to the town of Paarl. As we were winding our way through the beautiful rural scenery, we were wondering how anyone not familiar with the area would even find the venue but once we arrived at the Old Mill Theatre, we realised that the trip was going to be all worth it.


No, Smoortjies & Smoothies is not a food festival but it was definitely a feast filled with musical flavour.

When they walked into #BruinouHQ, before we even popped their CD into the deck, we knew these two guys are on a path to make a huge impact on the entertainment industry.

When they introduced themselves they oozed one of the qualities we at Bruinou.com place a very high value on: Authenticity!

I would be lying and you would rightfully suspect me of trying to hitch onto a populist bandwagon if I were to say that my encounters with Ashley Titus aka Mr FAT in any sort of way had a huge influence on my life in Hip Hop culture.
It was at best a minor incidental influence that later turned out to be somewhat meaningful in a few important ways.
On this day that we commemorate his passing I want to make it emphatically clear that I did not know Mr FAT very well and there are many of my friends and people who I am acquainted with who knew him far better than I ever could. I am hoping that they too will be reading this in the spirit with which it was intended.

Na vele gesprekke tussen die bestuur van die Ghoema Musiektoekennings en verskillende partye, insluitende Bruinou.com,  is ons verheug om aan te kondig dat daar 'n spinternuwe kategorie bygevoeg is vir die 2017 nominasies.
Daarby het ons sommer twee stukke ander goeie nuus vir kunstenaars en aanhangers van Afrikaanse Hip Hop.

We are not saying that there are no Conscious Hip Hop tracks coming out of Cape Town or from the rest of SA but we seldom see whole albums dedicated to addressing social and political issues and particularly those facing Coloured communities while keeping it in the context that though many of these issues are not confined to the coloured community, many of the macro issues that affect the nation have a more profound effect on Coloureds.
