Kroes-control - Can SWIRL entertain while raising some hairy issues?

The made-for-tv film, SWIRL is written and directed by Quanita Adams (Sara se Geheim, Arendsvlei) and was premiered exclusively on Sunday 21 March at 20:00 on kykNET&kie, DStv channel 145 and then also become available for streaming on Showmax.
We watched it and without giving too much of it away, here’s what we think of it.

Police gunned a 16-year-old Eldorado Park boy living with Down syndrome with nothing but biscuits in his hand, allegedly because he couldn’t answer them as they interrogated him. Residents say that the officer then dragged him by the neck into the back of a police van, preventing his father from accompanying them to the hospital. When there, police told doctors that he was involved in gang violence.

Reverend Leonard Maart was a humble man who raised a beautiful family and was very proud of his heritage and his community.
I’m going to try and not make this little tribuite about me, however, he influenced me greatly 25 years ago (when I first went to South Africa) so I thought this would be a good opportunity to share my experience with Reverend Maart from that time period in South Africa, that space, those emotions, apartheid, understanding Cape Town, etc…

GUTTED - The Fight of Kalk Bay Fishers
A new documentary about how harmful industrial fishing is destroying fishing communities in the Western Cape took the runner-up award at the International 1-Minute Film Festival in Cape Town last week.
The online documentary by Greenpeace, called GUTTED: THE FIGHT OF KALK BAY FISHERS, focuses on the Kalk Bay fishing community. It explores how laws favouring the industrialisation of fishing in South Africa have not only changed the socioeconomic situation of these communities, but also, the once vibrant and community-centric culture.
