In response to a recent incident in which he was the victim of police brutality, Cape Town Hip Hop artist K-Nine Die Hond has released a song called 'Fok Die Mapuza' and with its hard-hitting lyrics and dope beat, it is bound to find traction amongst those who have had first-hand experience of being victims of police brutality or who have witnessed an innocent friend or family member being assaulted by police officers.

We know that everybody in a Coloured community knows of someone who was smacked around by a police officer for absolutely nothing.
We also know that blogger Shana Fife sees these assaults as not just a few isolated incidents where police officers became a bit rough with a suspect who was "resisting arrest".
We asked her for her thoughts on why we have this seemingly widespread problem of some Coloured police officers using unnecessary and disproportionate force when dealing with Coloured citizens who in many cases have not committed any crime at all.

I am compelled to question the political purpose of the recent Netwerk24 article 'Wit Afrikaner dra gene van slawe en Khoisan - studie' (White Afrikaners carry genes of slaves and Khoisan - study).
Ethno-nationalism between South Africa's black and coloured people, in fact ethno-nationalism between all people is growing, along with it discrimination and anti blackness that detracts from the common experience of a shared struggle.

Clifton's Sheep in Wolves' Clothes

Kleurlinge... yes that is the only way I feel like describing these adherents of a false consciousness... Kleurlinge losing their minds over a sheep being slaughtered on a beach which they themselves as people are regularly being bullied to vacate and until a few decades ago were not even allowed the privilege to visit or set foot on.

Langarm known to the rest of the world as Ballroom dancing is and has for a long time not only been a cultural phenomenon particularly in Coloured communities in the Western Cape but has always been and remains to be a highly competitive sport across South Africa.
Like any cultural and sporting activity, Langarm dancing was racially segragated during the Apartheid era and dancing across the racial divide was a criminal offense.

The countdown is on to LANGARM, the much-anticipated new musical by award-winning, South African legend David Kramer. The actors in the leading roles are Rushney Ferguson, Cameron Botha, Kim Louis, Elton Landrew, Pierre Nelson and Julio Jantjies. LANGARM will be presented at The Fugard Theatre for the festive season from 20 November.

With almost every other film made on the Cape Flats that end up showing at mainstream cinemas, there is almost always a negative backlash and usually it's even before anyone who is complaining had actually seen it.
Nommer 37 is no different in that there is already a backlash from people who have most certainly not yet seen the film which opens at cinemas on Friday 1 June 2018.

That means that you can through images and documentation contribute to the visual telling of your family's and your community's history and help weave the tapestry which aims to make the hidden histories of Durban come to life.

Denver Breda's play 'Rokkie' at Suidoosterfees

Equally ridiculed and celebrated in our communities for their perceived flamboyance, while also in many straight circles accepted with a bit of confused caution, almost everyone on the Cape Flats knows someone who is stereotypically described as a "Kaapse Moffie" but seldom the stories of transgender persons are told from the point of view of and as the main character in a theatrical play.
The transgender persons in most theatre works are usually cast as secondary characters and many times as comic relief, but the plays usually do not revolve around them.

Zelna Jansen not only looks at what drew her personal anger at the proposal from KZNH structures of the ANC calling for the exclusion of Coloured (and Indian) persons from BBBEE, but unlike most of us... the statement touched a raw nerve and made many of us angry... as a lawyer she felt compelled to make an argument based on facts and not on emotions and gives us her objective reasoning as to why The Call for The Exclusion of Coloureds from BBBEE is Unconstitutional.
