Brandon Benjamin originally from Steenberg / Retreat near Muizenberg in the Cape Peninsula recently became the 52nd South African Men's Surfing Champion when he won the title at Buffalo City.
On Sunday 27 August 2017 the 22-year-old became the first person of colour to win the national surf title, but with hardly any media coverage and sponsorship to cover his costs, it's an uphill battle for the new champion to fulfill his dream of competing on the professional circuit.
As a kid I was probably far too aware of the societal impact of Apartheid than any kid my age should have been, so I was completely chuffed when finally I could regularly watch someone who looks like me, a person of colour, doing things that actually seem important on a TV show, instead of just being the comic relief or hapless servant in the background of white entertainment.
I was a serious laaitie but still, I was just a laaitie, so I can't even remember the name of the show but I do remember that prior to his appearance, what he was doing was exclusively the preserve of whites and I made it a point to remember his name.
Durban born Kurt Egelhof started his professional career in performing arts as a trained actor and a University of Natal Drama graduate in 1981, working in feature films, theatre and television and later as a producer and director with credits for high-ratings television dramas like Isidingo, Scandal, Backstage and Generations.
Kurt and I started interacting about five or six years ago when I wanted to know more about a project he was working on at the time and we have been staying in touch ever since.
It turned out there is a lot about this seasoned actor which I did not know and these videos are revealing even more.
